- Admission Requirements -
Along with a completed application form, the following are required for application to the Master of Agriculture in Horticulture degree program (Note - The GRE exam is not a requirement for acceptance into the Master of Agriculture in Horticulture degree program):
1. Evidence of award of an earned Bachelor's degree.
2. Grade transcripts from all previous baccalaureate and post-baccalaureate studies.
3. Personal statement of scholastic and career objectives. The statement may address pertinent aspects of the student's background and academic qualifications as related to admission to the program and should demonstrate a strong interest by the student in horticultural science including documentation of any relevant experiences in the field of horticulture.
4. Three letters of reference. The submission of reference evaluation forms and, if desired, letters of reference should be solicited from individuals who can provide a candid assessment of the student's abilities (including strengths and weaknesses), personality, character, and, ultimately, the student's potential for graduate-level academic success and professional achievement.
5. Minimum Preparation: A Bachelor's degree and evidence of knowledge of current, introductory college level concepts of algebra and chemistry and biology or botany or plant propagation. A minimum GPA of 2.8 (4.0 scale) is also required for admission to the program.
6. Application processing fee. A $40.00 processing fee should accompany the application. Checks should be made out to the University of Minnesota.
7. English proficiency. International students from non-English speaking countries will need to provide evidence of English proficiency by submitting TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) scores or an acceptable equivalent.
International students should contact the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) office to document their legal status in the United States and receive information about living and studying in the U.S. and, specifically, at the University of Minnesota. Documentation of financial, immunization, and insurance requirements are also required. Applications are accepted at any time; however, applications, complete in all respects, are best received by June 15 or October 15 for fall and spring semester enrollment, respectively.
It is up to the applicant to ensure that his/her application is complete including the $40 application processing fee. Incomplete applications will be held for up to one year to allow for submission of the required materials. Complete applications that meet the minimum requirements for admission will be reviewed by the Program Coordinator and the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) and a decision made to accept or reject the application. Special cases will be reviewed by the Graduate Studies Committee (GSC). Applicants will be notified regarding the status of their application on a regular basis throughout the process. |
