Master of Agriculture in Horticulture

Sample Subject Matter Specializations:

1. Enterprise/Production Horticulture: Preparation for careers in the commercial production and marketing of horticultural crops and/or products as an owner-operator or employee of a horticultural production and marketing firm concerned with production of any of the major horticultural commodities including nursery and landscape, turf, vegetables, floriculture, Christmas trees, or fruit and nut crops.

2. Garden/Landscape History and Design: Preparation for careers pertaining to the design and implementation of unique, aesthetically pleasing, horticulturally sound gardens and landscapes as an employee or owner-operator of a design firm, landscape nursery, or garden center.

3. Turf and Landscape Management: Preparation for positions as managers and superintendents at golf courses, athletic facilities (fields) and amusement or memorial parks or as an owner-operator or employee of a landscape consulting or maintenance firm.

4. Public Horticulture: Preparation for positions at arboreta, botanic gardens, zoological gardens, schools and other organizations in the public sector as managers, curators, propagators, or educators.

5. Restoration and Low-Impact/Low-Input Horticulture: Preparation for positions as consultants to or managers or owner-operators of businesses that design, develop, restore and/or maintain "natural" landscapes.

6. Sustainable Horticulture/Agriculture: Preparation for those interested in sustainable or organic horticultural production and management practices.

7. Entomology/Insect Pest Management: Preparation for positions within private industry local government, or state or federal agencies in nursery inspection, invasive species management and quarantine, and insect and insect pest management in production nurseries, greenhouses, parks, botanical gardens/arboreta, garden centers, indoor/outdoor landscapes, zoological gardens, and urban forests

Additional areas of interest might include horticultural marketing, horticultural education, horticultural therapy, environmental horticulture, urban horticulture, or horticultural writing and/or illustration. Or perhaps you have a different idea or focus - the program areas described above are not meant to be all-inclusive and additional programs of study specific to the interests and objectives of individual students within the Master of Agriculture in Horticulture program are acceptable and encouraged; a Master of Agriculture in Horticulture degree program can be designed for you too.
