Master of Agriculture in Horticulture

- Requisite Coursework in Soils, Plant Pathology & Entomology -

Students who have not completed relevant introductory coursework in soils, plant pathology, and entomology, either during or subsequent to completion of their Bachelor's degree, will be required to complete courses in these areas as part of their M.Ag. degree requirements. A minimum grade of C will be required. These courses are not prerequisites for admission to the Master of Agriculture in Horticulture program.

Courses currently offered at the University of Minnesota that satisfy these requirements include:

Soils (any one of the three soils courses listed below satisfies the soils requirement)

Soil 2125 - Basic Soil Science (4 credits; Fall & Spring Semester; prereq. Chem 1021 or Chem 1011) [NOTE: Soil 2125 may also be taken for graduate credit by making arrangements withe the instructor]

or          Soil 1125 - The Soil Resource (4 credits; Fall Semester)

or          Soil 5125 - Soil Science for Teachers (3 credits; Fall Semester)


Plant Pathology
(any of the four options listed below satisfies the plant pathology requirement)

PlPa 2001 - Introductory Plant Pathology for Horticulturists (3 credits; Spring Semester; prereq. Biol 1009 or equiv.)

plus

PlPa 4000 - Plant Pathology Practicum (1 credit; a minimum of one, 1-credit module from the five, 1-credit modules offered; repeats allowed; prereq. PIPa 2001)

Diseases of Turfgrasses (Three full days, 9:00 A.M. - 4:00 P.M., during the two weeks before the start of fall semester; M,W,F or F,T,Th in alternating years)

Diseases of Glasshouse Crops (Three full days, 9:00 A.M. - 4:00 P.M., during the week of spring break; M,T,W)

Diseases of Nursery Crops (Three full days, 9:00 A.M. - 4:00 P.M., during the two weeks before the start of fall semester; M,W,F or F,T,Th in alternating years)

Diseases of Vegetable Crops (offered on an arranged basis; check with instructor)

Diseases of Fruit Crops (offered on an arranged basis; check with instructor)

or         PlPa 3003/5003 - Diseases of Forest and Shade Trees (3 credits; Spring Semester)

or         PlPa 5201 - Biology of Plant Diseases (4 credits; Fall Semester; prereq. Biol 1009 or equiv.)


Entomology
(any one of the three entomology courses listed below satisfies the entomology requirement)

Ent 3005 - Insect Biology (3 credits; Fall Semester)

or         Ent 4015 - Ornamentals and Turf Entomology (3 credits; Spring Semester; prereq. one course
             in biology, horticulture or forest resources)

or         Ent 4251 - Forest and Shade Tree Entomology (3 credits; Fall Semester)
