Minnesota Landscape Arboretum
Horticultural Science is proud to be the academic
home to the nationally recognized Minnesota
Landscape Arboretum in Chaska. The Arboretum is an important resource to
the Department, and vice versa. In 2008, the Arboretum and the Department of
Horticultural Science celebrated a double anniversary: 50 years of the
Arboretum being Minnesota’s premier
public garden, and 100 years of cold-hardy plant research.
Minnesota Turf & Grounds Foundation
The Minnesota Turf
& Grounds Foundation is a partnership of eight turf-and-grounds-related
associations and the University
of Minnesota.
The goal of MTGF is to fund turfgrass research within the state, and our
department is the primary organization in Minnesota for such work.
The executive director of MTGF is officed in our building, and several of our
faculty sit on MTGF’s board of directors.
Minnesota Master Gardener Program
The Master Gardener
volunteer program was founded in 1977 by Horticultural Science faculty. The
program provides research-based education to everyday Minnesota
gardeners through classes, presentations, kids programming, community gardens, and
more. The program is housed in our department in order to preserve
the relationships among extension faculty, departmental faculty, and the Master Gardener volunteers
(more than 1900 throughout Minnesota) who serve their communities with a passion for education and horticulture.
Minnesota Nursery & Landscape Association
The Minnesota Nursery &
Landscape Association is the state’s largest green-industry association, and
Horticultural Science has shared a close relationship with MNLA for over 30
years. MNLA aims to support the Minnesota nursery
industry, which they do in part by providing money to our researchers. Horticultural Science, in turn, provides new
knowledge to the state’s landscapers, and nursery and greenhouse workers.
