The special demands of our climate, with its hot
summers and extreme winter cold, drive industry and public demand for
University-developed cultivars and germplasm. Horticultural Science takes this
demand seriously and, in meeting the obligations of a land-grant university,
has had and continues to maintain breeding and genetics programs in fruit,
potatoes, floriculture, woody landscape plants, and turf and ornamental
grasses. Since 2000, the Department has introduced 37 cultivars, including 25
chrysanthemums, three roses, three grapes,
two apples, one wisteria, one strawberry, one grass, and one potato.
