Contemporary American
universities often neglect the study of environmental problem solving in
human-used ecosystems. The issue is considered too “applied” for ecology
departments, and at the same time is not commodity-oriented enough for ag
departments. Horticultural Science has created a comfortable home for such
study. We believe that improving the quality of an environment is an integral
part of managing that environment — minimizing pesticide use, reducing runoff
into waterways, managing stormwater pulses, reducing water waste, preventing
the spread of invasive species, and restoring ecosystems. Our location (in a
major metropolis, where nonetheless natural resources abound) offers
researchers a perfect opportunity for such work.
