Purpose The current funding sources for the University of Minnesota Flower Breeding & Genetics program are state/federal support (Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station), grants, royalties (from released cultivars), and gifts. Federal support is diminishing and may soon disappear completely, which means that we find alternative funding sources to cover the day-to-day operational flower breeding research & education. However, most granting agencies do not support classic flower breeding activities. Applied research produces the new plant products, e.g. the Mammoth garden chrysanthemum cultivars that directly serve the needs of commercial growers, landscapers, and homeowners. Therefore, we are piloting two means whereby anyone (the general public, interested gardeners, Master Gardeners, flower societies, garden clubs, private industry, or corporations) may contribute to this program:
- direct sponsorship of ongoing programs
- the Flower Breeding Foundation
