Hort 1905 Freshman Seminar is a course designed for freshmen. It introduces new students to people and services that are available to them as they make the sometimes difficult transition from high school to college. The class also helps to "shrink" our large university by helping students to get to know the community that is our department.
Into the Broader Community
The class differs from year to year, but often involves a field trip. In 2009, Professor Bud Markhart took the students to the Dream of Wild Health Farm in Hugo, Minnesota. The farm is dedicated to the preservation of indigenous seeds, and to the improvement of the health and nutrition of Native American youth through summer gardening and nutrition programs.
The 2009 class displays their harvest at Dream of Wild Health Farm.
One of the students wrote about the field trip:
Hey!
That field trip was so much fun Bud! I can probably say this for the
whole group, but getting that kind of hands on experience is such an
awesome thing. Yes, my back is sore also but it was totally worth it!
Thank you again, Peace,
JK
