Display & Trial Garden

Originally a space used to run trials of flowers and herbaceous plants, the Display & Trial Garden has since been expanded to include an outdoor classroom, a pergola, and a kiosk. Local garden clubs, industry groups, and guests of the University visit the Garden throughout the year.

This year the expanded areas within the Garden are making possible many innovative activities: high school students are growing vegetables to be sold as a fundraiser to local restaurants; the Department of Rec Sports has incorporated garden programming into their summer clinics for elementary school students; Hort Club is experimenting with tomatoes, growing 24 varieties; an Edible Landscape is being tended; and Extension has found a new home for its Master Gardener classes.

A bird's-eye view of the Garden

The Garden is open to the public seven days a week, from sunrise to sunset.

How is the Garden Funded?

Support for the garden has changed throughout the years; it has been sponsored variously by garden clubs, student groups, companies in the horticulture industry, individual benefactors, and the University itself. The Garden needs to continue to generate private gifts in order to maintain its high level of service to the community. Make a donation to the Garden.

Tax-deductible gifts play a crucial role in all institutions of higher learning. Please contact Department Head Emily Hoover at hoove001@umn.edu with any questions regarding your donation.
